Raising the Bar and Closing the Gap
Whatever It Takes
In this sequel to Whatever It Takes: How Professional Learning Communities Respond When Kids Don't Learn, the authors revisit the question, "What happens when, despite our best efforts in the classroom, a student does not learn?" They describe how diverse elementary, middle, and high schools from throughout the United States have helped struggling students achieve proficiency and enabled proficient students to deepen and extend their learning by creating comprehensive systems of intervention and enrichment. In addition, the authors explore the following questions:
- What prerequisite framework must be put in place in order for schools to create effective systems of intervention and enrichment?
- How have the changes in national educational policy impacted the premise that schools should have a systematic plan for responding to the learning needs of students?
- How are highly effective districts successfully implementing the PLC process in all of their schools?
- How can school and district leaders respond to the pragmatic and philosophical objections to creating systems of intervention and enrichment?
- Is the PLC process sustainable? Is it transferable?
